Transporting Ammunition To Africa

All ammunition must  be packed and transported in a lockable ammo box placed within your checked luggage.

Only a manufacturer's carton is no longer sufficient. Remember that there is also a limit of five kilograms of ammo per passenger.

That includes the weight of your ammo box. Do not forget to declare your ammo at check-in.

Shooting in Africa

When you arrive at Johannesburg International Airport, do not be caught up in the fear created by the press. Spend a few days there, visit Rowland Ward where each visitor is treated with great care and respect by Richard Flack. There are many great markets in the area. Scroll down and see the Nkanga Lodge, it is absolutely First Class, they will pick you up at the Airport and take you to their exquisite Lodge which is very close to the Airport and quite secure including a locked gun vault, Jane and her family are also Hunters. They will contact Vanitha owner of She Cab who will transport you anywhere you wish and if you do not know where you wish to go, just tell her what you like and you will get there and back in complete safety. Vanitha knows the area as I know Benton. Rest up for a day or two, then Victor or Jaco will pick you up in the morning for your trip to Kirabo, you will be zoned in after the trip, adjusted to the time difference and after a very reasonable and pleasant ride to Kirabo, you will unpack, have lunch and begin the experience of a lifetime. In fact we returned to Nkanga Lodge the day before flying our so that we are able to get all of our ducks in a row. It also allows you to say good bye to Jane, her family and perhaps one last visit to a Market with Vanitha to pick up that last ironwood carving. When they say you "arrive as a guest and leave as a friend" it is absolutely true.

Woodcock Hill Inc. Is the North East, United States representative for Kirabo Safaris in South Africa. Kirabo is entirely owned and operated by the Wentzel Family, headed by Victor and Marina. The head of the hunting staff and a first class PH is their Son Jaco. Jaco will organize your days on Safari and see that everything runs without any problems with Sonika, who quietly keep the business and PR end of things going along. The Wentzel Family are in our opinion the finest and fairest priced operators of Plains Game and Cape Buffalo Shoots in South Africa. Everyone connected with Kirabo you will find brings sunshine into the room. If you do not leave Kirabo with a smile on your face, a taxidermy bill that gives you chest pains (meaning that you have had a fantastic Safari) and dreaming of your next visit to Kirabo then there is something wrong with you. You will find that the folks at Kirabo have a unique ability to make each and every visitor, young or old feel as if they are a member of their Family and a part of Kirabo and South Africa.

Kirabo Lodge is located in a magnificent area of South Africa with a beautiful lodge and superb hunting grounds. It is in our opinion four star accommodations. The only thing which beats the accommodations and the ability to take a record book animal whether by rifle or bow is the hospitality of the Wentzel family who own and operate Kirabo lodge.

You are made welcome and treated as if you are a member of the family from the moment you first speak with the folks at Kirabo. There are certainly many choices when it comes to going on a Safari but in our opinion there is no place which will make you more welcome and provide the opportunity for you to have a very successful safari. Visiting South Africa and spending time at Kirabo is like shooting Driven Birds in Scotland, once you do it, you can not wait to get back for another visit.

Contact us at 570-864-3242 or bland@epix.net to receive further information on setting up a trip of a lifetime

Kirabo Game Lodge provides clients with exceptional bow hunting opportunities. Two hunting methods are provided. The use of conventional hides/blinds or walking and stalking, the choice is completely up to the client.

Hunting from Blinds

We offer the patient hunter the opportunity to experience the African bush in the comfort of a functionally designed hide. Our hides provide an 120 degree shooting angle, using one of three shooting holes, in order to maximize the opportunity of getting your ideal trophy, and also to enable you to acquire the perfect line for your arrow. The inclusion of one way mirrors in the hides provide an 360 degree of sight right around the near vicinity of the blind, which enables the hunter to observe the superb species of the African Bushveld in their natural surroundings. Most of our trophies are hunted from blinds.

Do not hesitate call and book the time of your life

Game Ranger, Special Force Soldier, Professional Hunter and Personal Security Officer – Shadows in an African Twilight is a collection of fascinating stories about a life of adventure spread across nearly four decades in Africa and culminating in Iraq.

Many of the stories are not for the squeamish and tell of the aberrant behavior of man-eating lions and killer crocodiles, stories of courageous Rhodesian game rangers who while fighting to preserve the wildlife of a beautiful country were also fighting against brutal terrorist forces.

The author also relates some of his experiences as a pseudo counter-terrorist operator in the elite Selous Scouts during the Rhodesian Bush War and covers many of his experiences as a professional hunter in the exciting world of African safari.

Having also served in the previous South African era ‘black homeland’ of Ciskei he offers an often humorous insight into life during the wayward period.

This exciting book of high adventure ends with a discerning look into what it is like to work in war-torn Iraq in the specialized field of Security Escort Teams.

"When the vessel upended, the hippo burst onto the surface and as I toppled backwards into the river, my last glimpse was of Tjoi falling onto the hippo's exposed head, I then disappeared beneath the surface."

Kevin Thomas was born in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, in 1950. He grew up in the remote Sabi Valley where the wild environs would have an indelible effect on the rest of his life.

Upon leaving school he joined the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management where he served as a game ranger for close to six years, some of which were spent in the Zambezi Valley.

During this time he met his wife, Brenda, and due to the escalating bush war, and following a short-lived safari venture, decided to join the regular Rhodesian Army. As fate would have it, he ended up as one of the founder members of the Rhodesian Army's Selous Scouts, a formidable counter-insurgency unit.

When his career as a young soldier came to a controversial end he again took up the pastime of professional hunting and wildlife management in South Africa and Zimbabwe. More recently he worked in Iraq for two years as a Security Escort Team project lead. This is his first book.

Kevin is an accomplished hunting writer and for more than a decade now, has been a regular feature writer for African Hunter magazine. His hunting articles have also appeared in Successful Hunter.

This readership is growing constantly through aggressive marketing in the USA, Europe and Africa via shows and conventions and through our internet websites, In addition, a cross counter distribution by targeted outlets in South Africa (more than 200 outlets nationwide), Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe insures the magazine is highly visible on the sub-continent. Information - The magazine is published six times per annum, and consists of between 52 - 80 pages per issue. At present between 6000 and 8000 Magazines are printed per issue with copies direct mailed to readers on subscription. International interest continues to grow, and with it our subscriber base which is expanding all the time. History of the Hunter - The magazine was launched in December 1994 as a specialized publication servicing the hunting and outdoor community worldwide. The African Hunter is the first specific periodical on African hunting to be produced in Africa. From the outset, it was intended that the magazine should provide a shop window to the thousands of hunters worldwide interested in hunting in Africa. By its very nature, the African Hunter has been very well received by hunters in Europe, the United States, Southern and Central Africa, and is read in more than 50 countries across the globe. Content - Editorial content is structured to suit both the suppliers and consumers of the many resources affiliated to hunting, and is compiled entirely in Africa (from content to final lay-out). Many excellent authors, both local and international, contribute in-depth articles on Hunting Techniques, Shot Placement, Ballistics, Safari Camp Reviews, Species Fact Files and Conservation along with features on Wildlife Artists, Humorous Tales and Hunting Reports. Readers are invited to contribute through our Hunter’s Gallery section, providing accounts of their hunting experiences and trophies, topics most enjoyed by our readers. Many of our readers are non-hunters, and we provide general information about wildlife, safaris and other outdoor activities, giving a balanced content which appeals to a wide cross-section of enthusiasts.
